Former Deputy Mayor of Shelburne Steve Anderson presented his book "Why Not Me?" (March 2024)

Updated: Aug 21

On March 14th, 2024 the Brampton Literacy Centre @bramlitcentre attended the Mill Street Library where author and former Deputy Mayor of Shelburne Steve Anderson @stevedriventosucceed presented his book "Why Not Me?"

Prior to seeing Steve at the Mill Street Library, I asked my children to think about what they would like to ask Steve. They got paper and pencil, huddled, and wrote down 3 questions each. I reviewed their questions. To encourage independence, I asked them to read their questions out loud and to show me the spelling and/or grammatical errors.

Some of the questions they asked Steve were:

1) What was hard about your life?

2) What was it like to be mayor?

3) Why did you want to become a lawyer?

This exercise encouraged the following skill set:

- critical thinking and writing skills

- reflection on Steve's life and their own

- group discussion

- presenting their questions and listening to the response

- self-editing

Our children are competent human beings, and they are capable of achieving so much! They made their mama proud!

Thanks Steve for inspiring them and encouraging them to be their best selves! Thank you for the gift of "Why Not Me?" which lands in special way for me as Travis and I began our early social work careers helping youth with mental health and their families in the Jane-Finch community.

A special thanks to the Orangeville Library @orangevillelibrary for organizing this event.
